An Unusual and Creative Visit

Brass Rubbing is easy and rewarding. England's unique heritage of Medieval and Tudor brasses illustrate the knights and ladies, the scholars, the merchants and the priests of the past. Even the complete novice can produce a beautiful brass rubbing suitable for home decoration or as a gift in less than an hour...

Mediaeval churches throughout England contain treasures of a range of craftsmanship for visitors to see. Engraved brass plaques are of particular interest since they were laid down inside the churches as portraits in memory of the dead.

They are all accurate pictures of the past, telling us about social custom, dress, armour, trades, professions, family stories, and so on, and depict a continuous 350 year period of this country's history.

In our brass rubbing centre, unique collections of Mediaeval and Tudor brass facsimiles are available for visitors to make rubbings of their own choice. All the specialist materials needed and friendly instruction on techniques are provided in the inclusive price. The Stratford-upon-Avon centre possesses examples of fine local brasses, plus some of the nation's best, together with interesting modern brasses of such figures as Shakespeare and Henry VIII and Celtic designs.

Brass rubbing provides the ideal complement to history teaching with a wealth of material from Mediaeval and Tudor times. Art and craft teachers can find unlimited inspiration for fabric design, collage, remedial work and so on. Groups of the blind and those with other handicaps find this simple craft especially rewarding. Many other groups come simply for an enjoyable day out. Schools particularly value their visits as dovetailing with the National Curriculum.

The Brass Rubbing box is available for hire and suitable for Schools, Libraries, Workshops, Clubs & Societies, Brownies & Cubs, Guides & Scouts, Youth Groups, Fetes and Birthday Parties.
