WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
England's most favourite and famous poet dramatist, 1564-1616, was born to a local family in Stratford-upon-Avon. He married Anne Hathaway and had three children, of whom only one, Elizabeth, survived him. In 1594 he was a leading actor with the Lord Chamberlain's Men in London; later he joined the King's Men who performed the plays he was begining to write. Shakespeare retired to Stratford in later life and after his death he was buried amongst his family in Holy Trinity Church, beside the River Avon he loved so well. His famous works are still played year in, year out in the Theatres of Stratford, in particular those of the Royal Shakespeare Company, and all over the World.
