GEORGE AND THE DRAGON
This panel is based upon a woodcut from the 1590 edition of Spencer's "The Fairie Queene", dedicated to Queen Elizabeth I. The border is of Celtic Knotwork in design. St. George is depicted as a medieval armoured knight on horseback symbolising the triumph of goodness or light over evil or primordial chaos and darkness as represented by the dragon. In 1220 St. George became Patron saint of England, thereby displacing Edward the Confessor. In 1969 the Roman Catholic Church relegated him to the status of "local Saint" only. St. George is also the Patron of the Order of the Garter.
