CELTIC SCROLL
This panel is based upon a design from the late 7th century Book of Durrow. It is not clear where the Book was originally composed. However, it is known that until the 17th century it was kept at the monastery of Durrow in Ireland which was founded by St. Columbia. It is now housed at Trinity College Dublin. The decoration of the Book of Durrow consists largely of pages of interface patterns. Each of the four Gospels begins with a decorative initial, preceded by an illuminated "carpet" page, such as the one on which this design has been based. This design probably preceded the Gospel of St. Matthew.
